Boerewors Rolls

Description

The ultimate South African hot dog! A grilled boerewors (traditional farmer's sausage) nestled in a soft hot dog roll, usually topped with tomato and onion relish (smoor) and a squirt of sauce. A braai essential.

Ingredients

  • 1 coil Boerewors (approx. 500g - 1kg)
  • Hot dog rolls (1 per person)
  • For the Smoor/Relish (optional but highly recommended):
    • 15ml (1 tbsp) oil
    • 1 large onion, finely sliced
    • 2-3 ripe tomatoes, chopped
    • Salt and pepper to taste
    • Sugar (pinch, optional)
  • Sauces: Tomato sauce, mustard, Mrs. Balls Chutney (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Smoor: Heat oil in a pan. Sauté sliced onion until soft and translucent. Add chopped tomatoes, salt, pepper, and sugar (if using). Simmer gently for 10-15 minutes until the tomatoes break down and form a thick relish. Set aside.
  2. Braai the Boerewors: Grill the boerewors over medium coals (or pan-fry) until cooked through and nicely browned on all sides. Be careful not to burst the casing.
  3. Prepare Rolls: Lightly toast the hot dog rolls on the braai or in a pan if desired.
  4. Assemble: Place a piece of cooked boerewors in each roll. Top generously with the warm tomato and onion smoor. Add a squirt of your favourite sauces (tomato, mustard, chutney).
  5. Serve hot.
