Frikkadels (Meatballs)

Description

South African meatballs, typically made with beef mince, breadcrumbs, and seasonings, often pan-fried or baked and served with a gravy or tomato relish. A popular home-cooked meal.

Ingredients

  • 500g beef mince
  • 1 slice white bread, crusts removed, soaked in a little milk (approx. 60ml/1/4 cup), then squeezed dry and crumbled
  • 1 small onion, finely grated or very finely chopped
  • 1 large egg
  • 30ml (2 tbsp) chopped fresh parsley
  • 5ml (1 tsp) dried mixed herbs
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 15ml (1 tbsp) olive oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the beef mince, crumbled soaked bread, grated onion, egg, fresh parsley, dried mixed herbs, salt, and pepper.
  2. Mix everything thoroughly with your hands until well combined (do not overmix).
  3. Roll the mixture into golf-ball-sized meatballs.
  4. Heat olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Fry the frikkadels in batches, turning occasionally, until browned on all sides and cooked through (about 10-15 minutes).
  5. Alternatively, you can bake them: place on a baking tray lined with baking paper and bake at 180°C for 20-25 minutes.
  6. Serve hot with a tomato relish, mash, rice, or as part of a sandwich.
