Description
South African meatballs, typically made with beef mince, breadcrumbs, and seasonings, often pan-fried or baked and served with a gravy or tomato relish. A popular home-cooked meal.
Ingredients
- 500g beef mince
- 1 slice white bread, crusts removed, soaked in a little milk (approx. 60ml/1/4 cup), then squeezed dry and crumbled
- 1 small onion, finely grated or very finely chopped
- 1 large egg
- 30ml (2 tbsp) chopped fresh parsley
- 5ml (1 tsp) dried mixed herbs
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 15ml (1 tbsp) olive oil (for frying)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the beef mince, crumbled soaked bread, grated onion, egg, fresh parsley, dried mixed herbs, salt, and pepper.
- Mix everything thoroughly with your hands until well combined (do not overmix).
- Roll the mixture into golf-ball-sized meatballs.
- Heat olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Fry the frikkadels in batches, turning occasionally, until browned on all sides and cooked through (about 10-15 minutes).
- Alternatively, you can bake them: place on a baking tray lined with baking paper and bake at 180°C for 20-25 minutes.
- Serve hot with a tomato relish, mash, rice, or as part of a sandwich.
