Tomato and Onion Smoor (Relish)

Description

A quintessential South African relish, simple yet bursting with flavour. It's a slow-cooked mixture of tomatoes and onions, often spiced, and is the perfect accompaniment to pap, rice, stews, or braai meat.

Ingredients

  • 30ml (2 tbsp) Oil
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 3-4 ripe tomatoes, roughly chopped (or 1 can (410g) chopped tomatoes)
  • 1 green chilli, deseeded and finely chopped (optional, for heat)
  • 5ml (1 tsp) Curry powder (optional, mild)
  • 5ml (1 tsp) Sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • Fresh coriander, chopped (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pot or frying pan over medium heat.
  2. Add the thinly sliced onions and sauté until soft and translucent, but not browned (about 5-7 minutes).
  3. Add the chopped tomatoes and green chilli (if using). Bring to a simmer.
  4. Stir in the curry powder (if using) and sugar (if using).
  5. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the tomatoes have broken down and the sauce has thickened. Stir occasionally.
  6. Season generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
  7. Serve warm, garnished with fresh coriander if desired. Perfect with pap, rice, or as a side for any main meal.
